Refractory Industry
Use of Quartz & Quartzite in the Refractory Industry :
Quartz (Quartzite) Powder & Granules :
Quartzite and quartz are crucial in producing acid silica bricks due to their high heat resistance. The heat-resistant properties can be reduced by various chemical additives like lime, iron oxide, magnesia, and alkaline substances. For optimal performance, the raw material must have high silica content and minimal aluminium oxide (Al2O3).
Even a small amount of aluminium oxide (0.01%) can significantly decrease the heat resistance of silica. Metamorphic silica rocks are preferred over igneous rocks because their silica grains are cemented with more stable cristobalite and tridymite phases. Ideally, quartzite should be fine-grained, compact, and have a cryptocrystalline structure.
